The pictures in this calendar are beautiful mA, and I really appreciate that there are accompanying quotes (although I sometimes wish they were a little longer/ more focused), as that is my type of calendar. However, the calendar is a bit small for a wall calendar, certainly smaller than wall calendars I have used before, by about half an inch on each side. This is my fault for not reading the dimensions beforehand, but a good thing for others to be aware of, and also if the company is reading these- please make the calendar a little bigger! This means that there isn't much room to actually write in the date squares. I like the double hijri/gregorian dates, but I would have loved to see other religious holidays on the calendar as well. Overall, the absolute best thing about this calendar are the pictures, which are BEAUTIFUL, the best of any calendar I have owned. But it would be perfect if it were just more practical.

The pictures along with the quotes are a perfect combination. Colors and material of paper used is perfect. Look forward to turning the pages after every passing month. The farm in Nebraska homesteaded by my great grandfather was sold about 10 years ago as none in our family continued in the agricultural business. I currently live in Nebraska. Despite that, I knew precious little about the fields of corn and beans, farm machinery, center pivots, feedlots, and the rest of the farming enterprising one constantly sees as one drive around the state. Though this book purports to be the story of one farm family, and though the individuals described are somewhat interesting and, I would imagine, somewhat typical, they chiefly serve as fence posts along which the wider narrative of the details of farming in Nebraska is hung. If you are not interested in those details, I would guess this book would be somewhat of a drag for you. But if you have ever wondered what it is like to combine a field, or what "Roundup Ready" corn is, or what those tags on the ears of cows are, or why do farmers raise so much corn and soybeans as opposed to more edible crops, this is the book for you.

From the very first page of this poetically brilliant work, the reader is drawn into a saga that is at the heart of how civilization came into being. The unsung heroes being farmers, mostly family farms handed down for generation, and it is they who allowed a division of labor so that urban cities could arise in the first place. Presently corporate ownership of land and livestock are but one factor that family farmers must struggle against. Additionally, the onslaught against the blessed land, the very soil of our earth these farmers work to understand and protect, is under attack from pollution, pesticides, a rapidly changing climate, and even fossil fuel pipelines. I am still in the process of reading this gem of literature, and I cannot keep my eyes dry at times so as to continue. As heartbreaking as this saga is, this should be required reading for all thinking Americans, for the death of the family farm is indeed the death of civilization.

Truly a book with educational value and beautiful prose. Living in Wisconsin all my life, I know very little about farming. This book gives me great respect for the complex problems that farmers have always faced. The author has covered the history of American agriculture, as well as technology, world issues, politics etc and their effects on farming today. A most enjoyable book- I highly recommend it!

I ordered this book after hearing author Ted Genoays interviewed about the work on NPR. It was a terrific interview that emphasized the time Genoways spent with the main subjects of the book--farmer families in Nebraska. At the time, it struck me as a better explanation for what was happening in rural America than "Hillbilly Elegy".The content of the book goes way beyond the radio interview in that Genoways includes a lot of the specifics about the botany and chemistry of farming--and there is a ton of details involved in every planting and harvesting decision. Water is also a huge and defining issue discussed at length, and represents a major concern for the future as the central plains aquifer is increasingly drawn down on.The families profiled in "This Blessed Earth" are courageous and dedicated people--well aware of the precariousness of the way of life that they follow. Their stories are reason enough to read this important book.

This work of non-fiction follows a real Nebraska farm family for a year as they balance the complexity of family, farming, technology, and community. It provides in-depth excursions into the historical record that illuminates current policies, practices and politics. Yet most importantly, it provides a connecting point to a life that usually either romanticized, idealized, or criticized. As a college student, I lived through the farm crisis of the 80's and then farmed with my family until being called into ministry. Now I live and work in the suburbs and see this book as a way to bridge divisions as people come to understand issues through the lens of our shared humanity instead of the distortions of partisan politics. As a person who has lived this life, I found myself nodding and laughing and shaking my head at all the right times. If you haven't lived this life, the author will take you head and heart and soul into a whole new way of understanding the reality of rural and small town life in Nebraska. It is a good life...not an easy one for sure...but always full of optimism for the next year.

It is all too easy for folks to go to the market or eat their food without thought of its origin. This book gives one a clear path of the hard work and all the external forces that can make or break our ever-day farmer. Ted Genoways has done an excellent job of the joys and frequent hardships encountered by a smaller family run farm in his home state. His personal family farming connection (which surfaces throughout the story) fits well without detracting from the main theme. Well worth the read.

a good history of farm policy and what farmers have to put up with govt. policy and all the strict rules he/she has to follow,its crazy. with new advances of machines it made work easier but the computers,banks,marketing.laws,costs and the low selling price its insane. and i thought my dad had a hard farming life,labor wise yes but there was very little pressure compared to today. ted genoways,by spending a year with a farm family in s.e. nebraska,he gives us a better understanding of how hard it is for farmers to grow our food.

Rick Campbell added even more intrigue and seat of one’s pants action in this short story, Power Play.His expertise of the world of Naval submarine warfare shines brightly in all his stories and he is a kind enough author to translate the technical parts for the fans who have not lived that life.His use of the timeline and characters he has created is amazing. The reader can even become invested in the lives of the bad guys, thanks to Mr. Campbell’s character development.The only possible negative would be the abrupt ending to the story, but it is rectified by the preview of the upcoming book beginning on the next page.I highly recommend this book series to anybody that enjoys a great thriller!

This is not a "short story" - it's a beginning of a story. Probably just a way to offer an inexpensive Kindle "book" with the idea that you'll buy some of his other books. In itself, that's not wrong but advertising that it's a "short story" is wrong.

Like all of Campbell's books this short story is really great. It is a wonderful run-up to his book treason which should be out in March, which I have had the opportunity to read early. You will love it . It is action-packed from the very beginning . It keeps you in suspense and it has all of the same characters and many more. I highly recommend you buy the book Treason when it comes out.

Rick Campbell continues to deliver heart pounding adventure under the seas. Based upon his knowledge aboard US Navy submarines and his knowledge of the Russian subs, you feel as if you are in the story. It serves as a nice bridge between his last hit and the next one. Can't wait to read his next adventure. Keep them coming Rick!

This is a good short story , and it is written very well. Expect the same thrill, details, and naval lingo from Rick's other stories. The only criticism is that it was done to bridge two books, but it feels a bit rushed; and I think the reason for that is the story wasn't planned, but rather introduced to bridge the time until the next book. Don't get me wrong the material is pretty good, but it seems a bit off at times. Maybe is just because I've never read a short story from Rick before.

This short story is the prequel to Rick Campbell's upcoming book, Treason. It pick ups where Blackmail leaves off, with the Russians figuring out what to do after their defeat. Sixteen chapters in this short story plus the excerpt to the new book containing the prologue and 10 chapters. All written in Rick's usual style and cannot be put down until the end. It leaves readers with questions such as are the Russians ready for round 2? Does the Russian president get that date he seems to be after?

Clancy, this is not. Way too much telling and not enough showing. I lost count how many times the narration described before or after the actual conversation. Too much filler.As far as the plot, while it is intriguing, the execution comes across as flat. And, most importantly, this is only an unfinished short story.Disappointed to say the least.Three star push.

After a terrific start to this story, it turns out to be a short story “prequel” to another book available for purchase. Despite he author’s excellent ability to write about submarines and international politics, this felt like a bait-and-switch, giving readers a teaser to entice them to buy a full-length book. Very disappointed.

A: I suppose I'd like them to know that here is a family just as fascinating as the Tudors, perhaps more so. Certainly, they are more complicated, more wicked, and more passionate--takers of great risk. I think people have been put off this period because it has been so well studied by military historians that it has been regarded as being just about battles. But there is so much more to it than this! The history of the women of the period has been very neglected because of this emphasis on battles and thus the male leaders. Q: What appealed to you about using Elizabeth Woodville as the main character in a novel? In what ways do you think modern women can identify with Elizabeth? A: The things I discovered about Elizabeth in the first days of my reading about this period told me at once that she would fascinate me, and she has done so. Her background as a descendant of a family who claim to be related to a goddess was enough to have me absolutely enchanted straightaway. It is in the historical record that her mother was widely believed to be a witch, and that charge was leveled at Elizabeth also. This is exciting enough, but it also indicates that people were afraid of Elizabeth's power, and I am interested in powerful women. I think she will fascinate modern women in the same way that many historical women strike a chord: despite so many changes in the world, women are still trying to find happiness, manage their children, seek advantage, and avoid the persecution of misogynists. As women of any time, we have a lot in common. Despite the amazing advances in the rights of women (and I am so grateful for these myself), the struggle for women's freedom, independence, and the right to exercise power goes on. Q: Throughout the novel there are scenes relating the story of the goddess Melusina. Is this based on an actual historical fable, or is it something you created for the novel? A: The fable of Melusina is well known, perhaps to everyone, in its retelling as the story of the Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen and then in the Disney movie. As I say at the beginning of the novel, the legend of Melusina goes far back in time, perhaps to the classical legends, perhaps even earlier. The fable was studied by Carl Jung; Melusina has been identified as a form of the material of the world--the dark, watery element that combines with the sun in the alchemist's “chemical wedding.” This is a potent myth, indeed, and I retell the story here in a way that speaks to my characters and to me. Q: “These are not chivalrous times; these are not the times of knights in the dark forest and beautiful ladies in moonlit fountains and promises of love that will be ballads, sung forever” (page 22), you write in The White Queen. Is there a tendency to romanticize history, both for writers and readers? How do you make sure to realistically portray all aspects of the time period you're depicting, even the more difficult ones? A: Yes, indeed. These are not chivalrous times. I suspect that no times have ever been chivalrous times. We glamorize the past, and we romanticize it; we even look back at our own personal histories and cast a rosy glow or an enhanced dark shadow over our own childhoods. I keep my writing grounded in realism by reading a great deal before I start writing, by looking at the record with a critical eye, and by being skeptical of grandiose claims. Having said that, I too find it hard to resist the charm of Edward or Elizabeth or the marvelous character Jacquetta or any of the other powerful and interesting people who strove for themselves and for their families in these dangerous times. These are not chivalrous or romantic times, but they are times of danger--and in such circumstances one sees both the worst and best in people. Q: What challenges, if any, did you face when writing about the battle scenes and the military strategy, which was often a crucial factor in determining who took the throne? Did you visit any of the places where the battles took place? A: I became a researcher in military history, which is not my natural home! I visited battle sites and I read long and complicated descriptions of battles and the modern speculations. In the end I found myself absolutely intrigued and fascinated by how the battles were lost and won by small events, even sometimes by luck. The mist at Barnet is a recorded fact, and it was possible for me to weave it into the story of Elizabeth and her mother as well as to see it as a determining factor on the battlefield. The three suns of Towton were both a real phenomenon and a powerful metaphor for the troops. The history of battles is a central part to the story of the Cousins' War, and part of my task in this novel and the others in the series was to take this history, as I take any other, and make it come alive in the novel. Q: The fate of Edward and Richard, the princes in the Tower, is a subject that has confounded historians for centuries. Why did you decide to approach this aspect of the story the way you did? Is there evidence to suggest that Elizabeth sent her son Richard into hiding and a page boy in his place to the Tower? A: Part of my response to this story was simply emotional: I have a son of my own, and the thought of Elizabeth losing both her sons was tremendously painful. So I confess a bias to wanting at least one to survive. Then there is the historical evidence. A very interesting book by Ann Wroe, Perkin, suggested to me that the so-called pretender Perkin Warbeck might well have been the surviving prince, Richard. Her case for it is very compelling, as others have suggested too. There is other persuasive evidence that both boys were not killed as the traditional history (and Shakespeare) suggests. Even the traditional history--of them being suffocated in their beds in the Tower and buried beneath a stair--is filled with contradictions. If Perkin was Richard--and this is speculative history, as indeed all history around this genuine mystery must be--then Richard must have somehow survived. How could this have happened? It seemed to me most likely, not that he escaped from the Tower, but that he was never sent to it. His mother knew the danger her older son was in, had herself seen Henry VI murdered in the Tower, and was highly aware of the danger to her sons. It seemed to me most unlikely that she would hand over a second son when she had lost the first. The changeling page boy is my invention, but the history of Perkin in Flanders is based on his own confession. His story will continue in the series. Q: Elizabeth's father says to her, “We are forming a new royal family. We have to be more royal than royalty itself or nobody will believe us. I can't say I quite believe it myself” (page 63). How unlikely was it that Elizabeth Woodville would become queen? How has she been remembered by historians? A: Elizabeth's ascent to the throne is one of the great triumphs of a commoner and was considered so exceptional in her own time that one of the explanations offered was witchcraft. It is really a triumph of unlikely events. How unlikely that Edward, raising troops for a battle, would be diverted by a woman he must have met by chance? How unlikely that he would offer marriage when he knew as well as Warwick that to secure his reign he must marry well, preferably a European princess? How unlikely that even after a secret marriage he would honor his vows? It is a catalogue of unlikely events, and the only coherent explanation is that Edward and Elizabeth fell in love at first sight and married for love. Elizabeth, like many powerful and effective women, has been unkindly treated by historians. Some follow the gossip against her at the time that begrudged her good fortune; some point to the alliances she made for her family as symptoms of greed and self-aggrandizement. She gets little credit for surviving two periods in sanctuary, nor for her courage during the siege of the Tower. She is like many women “hidden from history” in the phrase of historian Sheila Rowbotham, and when her role is acknowledged she is often treated with very harsh criticism. Q: Anthony Woodville, the queen's brother, seemed to be ahead of his time in regard to education and culture. What more can you tell us about him? Was Elizabeth honoring his memory by becoming a patroness of Queens' College Cambridge? A: Elizabeth took over the role of patron of Queens' College from her predecessor Margaret of Anjou, but her interest in education and culture may have been inspired and would certainly have been encouraged by her brother, who was a true Renaissance man: spiritual, martial, thoughtful, and innovative. He brought the printer William Caxton to England and sponsored the first printed book; he was famous for his ability in the joust; and he was a loyal brother to Elizabeth and a devoted uncle to her son. The poem I quote in the book was indeed the poem he wrote the night before he died. We can only speculate as to the sort of man he can have been that he should spend his last hours on earth, not in rage or grief, but in crafting a poem of such detachment and clarity. Q: If you could go back in time and live in any of the royal courts you've written about, which one would it be and why? A: I would be absolutely mad to want to be a woman of any of these times. A Tudor or Plantagenet woman was wholly ruled by men: either father or husband. She would find it difficult to seek any education, make her own fortune, or improve her circumstances. Her husband would have a legal right over her that was equal to his ownership of domestic animals; and the chances of dying in childbirth were very high. If one could go back in time and be a wealthy man, these would be times of adventure and opportunity but still tremendously dangerous. I think I would prefer the Tudor period to diminish the danger of being killed in battle, but there were still regular plagues and foreign wars to face. I cannot sufficiently express my enthusiasm for modern medicine, votes for women, and safe contraception. Q: The younger Elizabeth emerges as quite a vivid and spirited character. Will we be seeing more of her in a future book? A: Elizabeth, the Princess of York, goes on to marry Henry VII and so is mother to a royal dynasty, just as her father and mother hoped they were creating a royal dynasty. She is, of course, mother of Henry VIII, and her granddaughter is England's greatest queen--Elizabeth I. Elizabeth of York will be the subject of the third book of this series, to be called The White Princess. But coming next is the story of the mother of Henry VII, the indomitable Margaret Beaufort, whom you may have glimpsed in this novel but who deserves a book all to herself. It is called The Red Queen.

This book was GREAT! I had no idea that Elizabeth was such a proactive (and prolific!) Queen. There is so much that we don't know about our English history (or at least we didn't go this far back when I was in school). I love how Philippa Gregory incorporates her research into her novels. She brings her characters to life.

I don't know what genre to place this book in. Stripped to its essence, I would have to say that this is a romance. It just happens that it takes place in the historical setting of the battle for the English throne known as the war of the roses. As such, it contains all the elements of an adventure novel as well as some aspects of a mystery. It also contains aspects of magic and witchcraft. What this book is not, and never professed to be, is a history book.The White Queen is the story of Elizabeth Woodville, the commoner and former Lancaster supporter, who married the newly crowned Edward IV from the house of York. They married in secret, for love, and kept it quiet for a time because marriages during that time among nobles were arranged for political alliances. Told mostly in the first person from Elizabeth's point of view, the book starts in 1463 when Elizabeth first meets Edward until 1485 when Edward's brother Richard III holds the throne.The book was meticulously researched and contains an extensive bibliography (for anyone wanting to read the history.) By using the first person, Ms Gregory is filling in the thoughts of Elizabeth as well as the behind the scenes dealings in the king's court. These are not historically accurate, nor were they ever portrayed as such. One can only guess what went on behind the scenes as no historical documents exist to tell us, and with all the backstabbing going on I am not surprised that nothing was put in writing.Another nice touch added by the author was the introduction of magic to the story. Elizabeth's mother claimed to be descended from Melusina, the water goddess who was half woman and half fish. Melusina's legend exists in many cultures and is probably most well known as that of a mermaid. This legend is woven into the events of the war of the roses masterfully, and Elizabeth and her mother are both accused of witchcraft at one point or another. Whether to believe or not is left up to the reader.If you enjoyed Outlander, by Diana Gabaldon as I did, then I think you will also enjoy The White Queen. They are both similar in that they are first and foremost love stories. The main difference is that there is no time travel in this book. Instead, the reader is transported to the fifteenth century and sees life through the eyes of Elizabeth Woodville.

Typical Gregory fashioned telling of the story of the York Queen and her rise from widowhood. Unfortunately it is this rise that cause so much turmoil within the York house. The War of the Roses/Cousins War is complicated enough, but then the York divided upon itself due to petty jealousies supposedly much caused by this secret marriage. Elizabeth was not someone to be trifled with and when wronged, her curses were sure to cause the torturous death of those that perpetrated them. but they tended to have a potential side effect of putting someone she loved in danger as well.Not sure if some of her problems were self fulfilling prophesies.This story did not have the emotional detail that some of her other stories. It was definitely based a bit more on fact and since that story was full she did not embellish as much -- and that part of her amazing story telling was missing

This was the first I've read by Philippa Gregory. (Yes, really!) I enjoyed the glimpse back into fifteenth century England a lot. This is the first book in Gregory's Cousin's War series, known to history buffs as the War of the Roses. This is also the first book I've read set in that time period, and Gregory successfully drew me back five and a half centuries. What a fascinating and tumultuous time during England's history. The viewpoint character is Elizabeth Woodville, who became Queen of England when she married Edward IV. I became absorbed in Elizabeth's life and that of her mother, and their fascinating blend of Christianity and witchcraft. Were they really like that? I don't know, but Gregory certainly convinced me. My only complaint is there were several longish passages of exposition where the viewpoint character relayed historical events in an almost textbook-like fashion -- albeit an interesting textbook! -- and I found myself skimming to get to the next time Something Happened.I absolutely loved the section dealing with the Princes in the Tower. Elizabeth was the mother of those princes, so we get to know them through a mother's eyes. Gregory does not buy into the commonly held notion that they were murdered by their uncle, Richard III. In high school English class I wrote a term paper on the subject, and I agree with her. She states her case convincingly.Even with the long passages of History Telling, I enjoyed the book enough that I bought the second in the series.

The death poem, or jisei in Japanese, is expected to be composed in addition to a last will and testament. This book's masterful compiler, Yoel Hoffmann, notes in his introduction that jisei have been interpreted as final concessions to politeness and proper social conduct (i.e., they are salutations to those still living), but quickly dismisses this theory by showing how few of these poems are written using the honorific language intended for such salutations. This collection offers us both tanka written by Zen monks and a larger helping of death-related haiku: for those unfamiliar with the mechanics of those styles, the former is a 5-line poem following a pattern of "5-7-5-7-7" syllables per line, while the latter is a 3-line poem following a "5-7-5" pattern of syllables per line. Neither uses any rhyming convention, even though the vast majority of the words in the Japanese language end with one of the five vowel sounds.Hoffman's synopsis of tanka poetry's spiritual inclinations is as accurate as any you're likely to read (he likens the poet to "a person holding two mirrors in his hands, one reflecting a scene from nature, the other reflecting himself as he holds the first mirror (p. 19-20.)" The vast majority of the poems here were recorded on dates during the Tokugawa period of Japan (1603-1868), even though jisei practice only really became de rigeur in the subsequent Meiji era. Nevertheless, the Tokugawa-era poems perfectly reflect the dramatic increase in cultural pursuits - the fabled ukiyo or 'floating world - particular to that time. This collection also shows the great friction between the Japanese heathen spirit of Shinto and the neo-Confuciansim popular during the Tokugawa era: the former's identification with nature spirits and the latter's more anthropocentric morality sometimes mesh perfectly in the poems, and sometimes make for bold moments of incongruity.The book's publisher, Tuttle, is one that specializes in Asian-themed books (travel journals, reprints of classics etc.) In their case, keeping this restrictive policy towards their choice of subject matter has allowed them to, ironically, release books that maintain a very universal appeal. Japanese Death Poems is one of these: despite the author's careful attempts to explain who wrote which poems under what uniquely Japanese historical conditions, these epigrams rarely fail to transcend time and place. Having said that, there are examples here that would be highly relevant to practicing Japanologists: there are entries from the renowned painter Hokusai (who pictures himself as a ball of blue fire hovering in the air), from haiku master Basho's oft-boastful pupil Kyoriku, and from several of the famous 47 ronin [masterless samurai] that inspired so many legends and epic films. Along with the historical perspectives come knowledge of cultural facts that may be unknown to new students of this culture, such as the Buddhist convention of giving a deceased person a new name, or the metaphorical significance of birds like the plover and hototogisu (cuckoo.)Ultimately, though, the book's main selling point is not its ability to fill the gaps in one's historical knowledge, but its ability to provide fresh, unexpected perspectives on the great, creeping inevitability of death. One surprise comes in the sheer breadth of humor, from cheeky to mordant, that animates many of these entries: there are, for example, death poems that poke fun at the institution of death poems themselves, and also ones that upset the Japanese notion of reverence for grand masters in any craft: one poet takes the lines of Basho's famous death poem ("On a journey, ill: / my dream goes wandering / over withered fields") and twists them into the irreverent parody "Locked in my room / my dream goes wandering / over brothels." Elsewhere, the poet Moriya Sen'an unleashes some skillful punning while anticipating a happily debauched afterlife: he requests to be buried beneath a leaky wine barrel, with the gag being that the Japanese for "the cask will leak" ("moriyasennan") is phonetically identical to the writer's name. When not surprising with comic devices, we can find other moments of extreme unorthodoxy in this book, such as when a character named Shisui is asked to compose a death poem, but merely paints an enso in his dying moments (an enso being the plain black circle characteristic to Zen Buddhism, symbolizing 'void as essence' and enlightenment.) The Zen monk Takuan Soho chose a similar method, painting the Chinese character for "dream" in lieu of a death poem as he breathed his last. The orthodox entries are no less interesting, though, showing that much sublimity and individuality is possible even when working within the rules, like the suggestion that death poems should include a seasonal image from the time in which the writer is dying.Buddhist ethics and views on eternity do, naturally, color much of the poetry in this volume: this may be problematic for anyone who absolutely cannot handle a good dose of Mahayana Buddhism in particular (a philosophy in which the "void" is not the opposite of the phenomenal world, but rather "the world in all its shapes and colors" itself [p. 306.]) If this way of thinking doesn't agree with you, there is plenty of poetry here making no explicit or implicit reference to articles of Buddhist faith. Some do anyway, and yet are no less effective in their simple poignancy, or their ability to be applied to the lives of any mortal: see for example Sofu's entry, which reads "Festival of Souls: / yesterday I hosted them / today I am a guest..." Whatever one's inclination towards Buddhist thought, many of the stories Hoffman unearths are fascinating and vital- who can fail to crack a smile at the story of the poor monk Eisai (1141-1215, a founder of Japanese Zen): he traveled to Kyoto near his death in order to "show people how to die," willed himself to die while sitting in a meditative zazen position, but then revived when his audience complained that he had died too quickly!I highly recommend Japanese Death Poems as a nuanced alternative to the more sensationalist (when not inaccurate or outright fabricated) "dark side of Japan" material. Given, the libidinous extremes uncovered by those other accounts are mind-altering when produced properly, but I often wonder what end purpose motivates these publishers' enthusiastic quest to show only the most blood-soaked side of Japanese life and death. A personal regimen of welcoming aestheticized psycho-terror (or, as the U.S. Marines call it, "embracing the suck") works to a certain degree, but unchecked death drive produces vastly diminishing returns when taken on as a ful-time way of life. So, when you do tire of that, there are books like these to turn to, which contain more genuine surprises than many of the books claiming they will shock you out of your cultural torpor. Whether these compact little jisei are motivated by an inherited Confucian sense of duty, by pure egotism, or other factors, the effect of reading them all is intoxicating: there is something special about people forcing themselves to contribute to creative life even as death prepares to swallow them up. I leave the last word to Hoffman here, since he shows what it is that ignites this spiritual defiance:"...how wise and humane is a culture that does not contrive an otherworldly supreme being to rule this world, the only one we know. One might ask what there is to be gained from a 'spiritual' sovereign who disturbs the peace of man with commands to act one way or another, promising in exchange an eternal world where scent, shape and color never enter [...] [Japanese nature] is not nature as understood by Western religions, the work of a creator who stands apart from his work, but nature bursting with vitality, appearing and disappearing in cycles of life and death, os summer and winter, spring and fall (p. 38-39)."

Educational, moving, and considering that they are Death Poems, enjoyable. The notes with each poem are very succinct and enlightening. I wonder if these writers would have imagined that there last Poems before death would be available centuries later for 1.99 on a Kindle. Everything is an illusion.

I really enjoyed this book. It's a very interesting compilation of poems and often the backstories of the individuals writing them. The different perspectives and insights on death as expressed in poetry was a neat look into another culture.

Intriguing theme for a collection that makes every poem all the more poignant. These brief poems are given good context by the collector/translator, but the real draw is the poems themselves. Most are not morbid but instead small crystallizations of wonder or beauty.

It is traditional in Japan to have a poem on your lips at the time of your death. Many cultures have the tradition of ascribing importance to the "last words" of a dying person, but I think Japan is unique in attempting to make death a beautiful aesthetic experience. As such, this collection has something for all humanity. Death is something we'll all eventually face; doing so with something approaching dignity is something we can all hope to do.Many cultures and religions have a tradition of a sort of happy hunting ground for an afterlife, to provide comfort to the masses of people who have had a hard life. It is my sense that the Japanese didn't have this sort of tradition in Shinto or Zen. As such, the Japanese approach to the end of life has particular poignancy for modern secular humanists, who also have no "happy hunting ground" to hope for.I can't speculate whether or not the poems are well translated, or the cultural anthropology was accurate, but I found the collection profoundly moving.

this book has a wonderful introduction. it is a large chunk of the book, instead of the usual ten pages or so it's 87 pages! this serves to educate the reader on japanese poetry throughout history and it is very useful in understanding and internalizing the poems.after that are the poems of zen monks, many with little mini biographies preceding them that often leave you wishing you could read all about the poets, even more so after you read their last words! some of these poems made my hair stand on end in awe. very deep and transcendental words.next is the haiku poets, also truly beautiful and unique.

These kind of poems are to be approached with reverence. I am very grateful that, finally, someone had the courage to move on from the heart moving poetry of nature to this particular subject. It is a deeper theme in many aspects, personal, social, semantics, as well as regrets for living this world. It is a very well explained kind of poetry and this book deserves a lot of attention. The reader will step in the realm of things a bit hard to talk about, but we all have things to learn from these poems.

The ingredients can be found in grocery stores in most mid and large communities. In my experience,mainstream grocers aren't the best source. If you can't find the ingredients locally you will online. Enjoy.

This is a delightful book will put together except for the print: instructions and ingredients etc. are all in a smaller VERY light ink print which is difficult to read.

The book is very nice, recipes, pictures, good content. I got the kindle edition and find it very difficult to navigate back and forth to follow the ‘more information’ links....so one star down for that....

Love this book! I keep it out because both my husband (he doesn't even cook) and I to refer to and try something new. Recipes are on point and their Youtube Channel is wonderful!

So many kudos to this talented pair... where do I start?? I've loved watching them on Youtube and now their cookbook has become one of our kitchen's top go-to sources for delicious recipes. My husband and I are so picky about Chinese takeaway, we don't typically order in. Now, we just make our favorite and new ones at home - thanks to Amy and Julie. Can't wait for the next book!
