This book feels turn of the last century. Beautiful prose. Interwoven stories of young boys then as happenstance meetings as adults. Minus intrigue Sommerset Maugham could have written it. I recommend for a rainey day when there are few distractions. Stay tuned I am going to re-read I believe I was distracted through most of my reading and couldn’t quite savor the prose enough.
Critics have accused him of writing plot-less novels; PM himself has stated he writes the same book over and over again. In France, this has proved a successful formula, penning annual variations on the theme of feeling rootless, vaguely persecuted, weary of the Others, having no clear identity through parents or official papers. PM’s heroes are his alter egos, writing in the I-form about quests, searches, investigations about persons, names, photographs, any clue to explain his own past and true identity. Always from a different angle.In this 1984 novel, PM exploits his teenage experience at a weird Parisian boarding school for children ‘rejected’ by their wealthy parents. His memories from his schooldays in the 1960s are compared here--up to 20 years later and quite elegantly—with chance meetings with a few living teachers and a dozen fellow pupils. Why were they abandoned? What has become of them ten to twenty years later? Looking back in the guise of a minor stage actor, PM tried to find out more about himself through the experiences and fates of persons (m/f) who knew him as a 12-15-year old. The result is negligible, as in his other books. One conclusion towards the end of the book is a direct reference to its title: that boarding school prepared such nice boys as PM and his fellow pupils very poorly for real life. One of my favourites.
