I actually got this book because I went on a business trip to Cleveland and wanted to learn a bit about the place. Out of several books on Cleveland teams, this was the cheapest, so I bought it. Author does a pretty good job of describing the Cleveland sports scene and the culture of the town. Sometimes he gets you really caught up in the moment while describing games. On the flip side he can really go off on a tangent and bore you. I almost put the book down a few times because he started losing me. Thankfully I picked it back up and it got pretty exciting as you approach the end.
So, I really like Scott Raab (at least from what I have read and seen of him). I mean he is a die hard Cleveland fan like me. So what's not to like? ;) His last book (Whore of Akron) was very enjoyable. He spews a lot of truth even if it's bitter truth. He basically wrote what every Cleveland fan was thinking when Lebron left town. So the read was great. So when I heard him coming out with a new book on 92.3 the fan I went to amazon and ordered it. I just finished it last night and I must say I was a bit disappointed and here is why. He spends a lot of time on the season they lost to the Warriors and way too little time on the season that the book is actually about. I was reading and over half way done with it and he was still on 2 seasons ago. I wanted to hurry and get to the good stuff. His apology to Lebron (in a round about way), Jewish rhetoric and random comments about random things got to be a little drawn out as well. So finally with about 1/4 of the book to go, he started in on the championship season and rushed right on through it. Bummer. And the ending??!!?!? Let me tell you about the ending.... It just ends. Quickly. Like Scott hit a deadline. It ends with Lebron's incredible block of Andre Iguodala. Nothing... not a peep about Kyrie hitting the greatest basketball shot in Cleveland history. Not a mention of the celebration... the parade... nothing. Just the incredible block and then... acknowledgements. WTH Scott? I feel duped. Is there pages missing? I went back and double checked. Yup, that was the end of the book. Scratching my head, I tossed it across the room and tossed and turned the rest of the night trying to sleep thinking about that stupid ending. The book is titled "You're Welcome, Cleveland: How I Helped Lebron James Win a Championship and Save a City".It should be titled,"The Cavs lost the first year Lebron came back, I am Jewish, my son misses a lot of school because of Cleveland sports that I make him go to, and... oh yea, the Cavs did finally win the Championship but I don't really want to talk much about that"
Scott you have outdid yourself once again. I was moved by your story telling especially about you and your son. This book is a great read. A book about failure and redemption. On the day of Game 7 I was delayed out of Salt Lake City for over 2 hours. No problem I still had about 10 minutes to catch my connection in DFW to Quad Cities. Well I got to the gate and it was closed but after about 20 minutes the gate door opened back up and all the passengers got off. A seat would not go into its upright and locked position so they had to replace it. I figured I'd make it to the hotel in Burlington Iowa to catch the fourth quarter. Well long story short the plane didn't leave for 2 hours and when I got to the Quad City Airport American had left my bags in Dallas. I got to my rental car to hear LeBrons block and the win. It was amazing I finally got to my hotel around 1230 and watched the interviews and highlights until about 2 am I was so happy for Cleveland, LeBron, and You.
Loved it. But I like Scott as a writer, and I like his journey as a fan. Definitely worth the read, especially if you are a Cleveland sports fan.
Raab gives voice (eloquent, profane, belloicose, tender) to a fanatic's passionate devotion to his teams, so of course the results aren't always pretty. I admire the bracing honesty. I admire the humor. I also admire the humility, the wonderful interaction between a father and son, and the keen insights into basketball played at its absolute highest level. Raab doesn't shy away from colorful criticism of fools and phonies (I may have to frame his paragraph on Chris Christie), but nowhere does he point that unflattering light more brightly than on himself. I hope he finds another opportunity to write a third book on Cleveland and make this a trilogy. Go Tribe!
Heard the author interviewed on ESPN radio and as a life long Cleveland sports fan I am turned off to just by the titles of this book and by the author's previous book "The Whore of Akron." First, Northeast Ohio doesn't and never will own LeBron. LeBron had every right to decide to sign with the Heat as disappointing as it was. And, the author claims that the Cavs' championship "saved" Cleveland which is a load of b.s. Sports bonds people in a community but at the end of the day it's just entertainment. It doesn't make neighborhoods nicer and safer. But hey, maybe the author deserves his self-proclaimed credit for the the 2016 Cavs bringing home a title. Maybe LeBron returned to Cleveland just because of the guilt tripping, trash title of the first book. NOT! Go Cavs! Go Tribe! Go Browns! Written by D. Zimm
Once again, Raab takes us down a path where he can't see further than the end of his nose. As anyone who has ever encountered Raab knows, the only thing that matters is Raab, and how terrible his life is because of a couple sports teams. I wonder how his kid feels, knowing that another person, one who tries to avoid Raab at almost all costs because of Raab's use of ad hominems over the years, dictates how Raab feels when he wakes up every morning. As a Clevelander, yes, it did suck that our sports teams didnt win for a long time, and it was awesome to finally win. But it wasnt life consuming, winning didnt save a city that sees half its children born below the poverty line, and Raab's constant whining doesnt represent a city that has always had to bust its rear to get what it deserves, and didnt move to a bigger city to find a shinier job, you know, like Raab did.
